Fitting Pulsar Wind Tori. Ii. Error Analysis and Applications
نویسنده
چکیده
We have applied the torus fitting procedure described in Ng & Romani (2004) to PWNe observations in the Chandra data archive. This study provides quantitative measurement of the PWN geometry and we characterize the uncertainties in the fits, with statistical errors coming from the fit uncertainties and systematic errors estimated by varying the assumed fitting model. The symmetry axis Ψ of the PWN are generally well determined, and highly model-independent. We often derive a robust value for the spin inclination ζ . We briefly discuss the utility of these results in comparison with new radio and high energy pulse measurements. Subject headings: neutron-stars: rotation-stars: winds, outflows

CXO imaging has shown that equatorial tori, often with polar jets, are very common in young pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). These structures are interesting both for what they reveal about the relativistic wind itself and for the (nearly) model-independent measurement of the neutron star spin orientation they provide. The later is a particularly valuable probe of pulsar emission models and of neutr...
متن کاملAn improved solar wind electron-density model for pulsar timing
Variations in the solar wind density introduce variable delays into pulsar timing observations. Current pulsar timing analysis programs only implement simple models of the solar wind, which not only limit the timing accuracy, but can also affect measurements of pulsar rotational, astrometric and orbital parameters. We describe a new model of the solar wind electron density content which uses ob...

We present results from X-ray and radio observations of the recently discovered young Vela-like pulsar PSR J2021+3651, which is coincident with the EGRET γ-ray source GeV 2020+3658. A 19.0-ks Chandra ACIS-S observation has revealed a ∼20 × 10 pulsar wind nebula that is reminiscent of the equatorial tori seen around some young pulsars, along with thermal emission from an embedded point source (k...
متن کاملPulsar bow - shock nebulae II . Hydrodynamical Simulation
We present hydrodynamical simulations, using a 2-D two component model (ambient medium and pulsar wind have different specific heat ratios), of bow shocks in a representative regime for pulsar wind driven bow-shock nebulae. We also investigate the behaviour of a passive toroidal magnetic field wound around the pulsar velocity direction. Moreover we estimate the opacity of the bow-shock to penet...
متن کاملChandra and Xmm - Newton Observations of the Vela - like Pulsar B 1046 − 58
We present results from Chandra and XMM−Newton observations of the radio pulsar B1046−58. A high-resolution spatial analysis reveals an asymmetric pulsar wind nebula (PWN) ∼6 ′′ ×11 ′′ in size. The combined emission from the pulsar and its PWN is faint, with a best-fit power-law photon index of Γ=1.7 +0.4 −0.2 and unabsorbed luminosity of ∼10 32 ergs s −1 in the 0.5−10.0 keV range (assuming a d...
